Poetry Contest!

TIME For Kids Poetry Contest
Calling all poets! TIME For Kids has a challenge for you: Write a funny, rhyming poem. Enter it in the TIME For Kids Poetry contest. Read the rules below. The grand prize winner will receive an online class visit from poet Kenn Nesbitt, a signed copy of Nesbitt's newest book of poetry, My Hippo Has the Hiccups, and publication on timeforkids.com. Four finalists will receive a signed copy of Hippo and publication of their poems on timeforkids.com.

CHARLIE SCHMIDT

Poet Kenn Nesbitt will judge the TIME For Kids Poetry Contest.

If you can't imagine how to begin writing a funny, rhyming poem, here are some tips from Nesbitt. Make a list of things you like. Your list might include chocolate, basketball, dogs or peanut butter. Choose your favorite topic from the list. For example, if you choose to write about chocolate, think, "What's funny about chocolate?" For Nesbitt, the largest chocolate bar in the world would make a funny topic. Now, how do you tackle those tricky rhymes? Use a rhyming dictionary or go to rhymezone.com and type in a word to get a list of rhyming words. Finally, Nesbitt suggests you read some examples of funny poetry on his website at poetry4kids.com.

WHAT: Write a funny, rhyming poem and enter it into TFK's Poetry Contest. Poet Kenn Nesbitt will look for originality, creativity, humor and rhyme in the style of his own poetry. To read some of Nesbitt's poems, go to poetry4kids.com.
HOW: Send your poem by email to contest@poetry4kids.com. The subject line of your email message should read TFK POETRY CONTEST. Be sure to include your first name only, your email address and your parents' email address.
DEADLINE: April 30, 2009
